"My mom always wears two different hats on her head. I wonder why she doesn't choose just one instead?"

The young boy in "My Mom Wears Two Hats" can't figure out why his mother wears these two very different hats on her head. She wears one when she rough houses, one when she tucks him in at night, and even a specific one when he gets in a little bit of trouble. Finally, he can't help but ask, why doesn't she wear just one?

My Mom Wears Two Hats

Q: So who is asking this question and why?

Q: Well, does he find out by the end?

I'm not going to spoil the ending or anything, you'll have to join the Kickstarter for that. I will say, in a beautiful reminder of the sacrifice and love required to raise a child by herself, the mother tells him exactly why she has those two hats by the end of the story. And who knows, he may even get one of his own!

Q: You mention "raising a child by herself", what's the inspiration behind that?

What inspired me to write this story was a conversation myself and a few others in my family had with my mother on one holiday. I won't go into too many details out of respect for my family, but my mom raised my brothers and me, despite having my father in the home.

She did everything from paying for us to go to private school, cooking, taking us to church, and running a business; you name it. She wore many hats for us, and I wanted to celebrate her and all of the single parents who do the same for their children.

Q: Beautiful. Okay, last question. How do I get my hands on a copy of "My Mom Wears Two Hats?"

I plan to launch the Kickstarter in the fall/winter of 2023! I'm excited about the special goodies and supplemental material we'll be able to offer alongside paper and hard copies of the book. If you'd like to get regular project updates as we approach the launch, please fill out the form below!

Q: What do you want families to takeaway from this story?

I want parents who are living in single-parent households, or a similar situation, to have a way to express how much they sacrifice and love their children. I believe the story from the child's perspective helps kids understand that their mom or dad has to do everything that traditionally two people would do.

On the other hand, if you are not in this situation, this book will be a great way to teach your children empathy. Statistics show that it is highly likely that someone in their class, play group, church, wherever will be experiencing this reality. It will be a great way for parents to help their own kids understand family dynamics outside of their own.
